JAN HENLEY MANUSCRIPT APPRAISAL SERVICE

Some years ago, in response to requests from students I have worked with, I set up this manuscript appraisal service in order to give writers' work individual attention. It has been gratifying to see writers progress, win competitions, become published in magazines and novels, and have their plays performed on stage.

In contrast to some larger companies, this service is affordable and I deal personally with every manuscript sent in. I provide an honest and rigorous critique as well as advice on contacting agents and editors. For writing that has reached a publishable standard, I also work in conjunction with a leading literary agency.

My aim is to keep the service good value for money and accessible to all.

Some comments on the appraisal service.

‘I was asked, as winner of the Arvon competition, to write a few words of thanks to our judge Anna Cheska for the quality of the critiques. I do so with pleasure, as I had already e-mailed my thanks to her for the detail and perception of her remarks. What a pleasure it was to read the remarks of someone who has listened to the music of every sentence and commented constructively. The critiques alone felt like a prize…’ (excerpt from article in West Sussex Writers’ Club newsletter)

‘All your comments are as ever spot on and very helpful…’

'This is to formally thank you for the comprehensive work that you carried out on my manuscript. It was exactly the kind of critical analysis and positive advice that I hoped to receive.’

‘I have shared your comments with members of my support group and everyone was very impressed with the depth and scope of the report you wrote for me. Your input is exactly what I feel I need to make the most of my story.’

‘I am most impressed with your skill and the way you have analysed my novel. I am certain all the advice you have given me will be immensely helpful.’

‘Thanks to you I now understand viewpoint!’

This comprehensive and constructive critique service includes advice on structure, plotting and narrative technique (dialogue, characterisation, use of viewpoint etc) and advice on approaching agents and editors.
